My Dental Implant Crown Has Fallen Off

Posted on: May 15, 2018

Implant crownFirst things first, do not panic. Implant crowns have known to fall off if you happen to chew on hard foods that you shouldn’t be chewing on. It is possible for them to fall off if you chomp down on hard candy, ice, bite your fingernails, or have any trauma that precariously graces the area of your implant crown.

When you have implant crowns you need to be conscious as to what you are putting in your mouth as these aren’t lifelong dental devices that last forever. Let’s get real, nothing lasts forever, not even our precious lives.

If you find yourself in this predicament you may try to fix it yourself, but this is a bad idea and never a good decision as you are not a qualified cosmetic dentist. Before you see your dentist, you need to follow the strategies below:

  • You need to clean and disinfect the crown that has fallen off

  • Call a qualified cosmetic dentist right away

The longer you wait for your crown to be out of your mouth, the higher the chance your mouth has of multiplying tons of bacteria, which will then lead to decay.  Once decay happens inside of your mouth and on your crown, your cosmetic dentist will no longer be able to reuse your crown, which will eventually cost you more money in the long-run.

Once your crown has fallen off, your dentist will need to cement this to your abutment.  If you wait too long to act when your crown falls off, you will need to have your dentist create a whole new crown for you.

The price will vary and depend on what type of material was used, the brand of the porcelain, the region, and the cosmetic dentist you choose. Of course, you should choose a dentist that is experienced as a job well done is essential to keeping your implant crown and your smile in tip-top shape.

Acting Right Away Is Essential When Your Implant Crown Falls Off

If you try to glue your implant crown on yourself, you will run into many issues in the future and further damage the crown. We cannot stress enough how important it is to refrain trying to fix the problem yourself. You will put your tooth and your health in a dangerous position if you try to fix your implant crown alone. Seek the help of a qualified specialist if you truly care about the success of your long-term smile.

Some possible issues that may arise if you try the do-it-yourself method:

  • You may need to get an expensive root canal

  • You can end up killing your tooth permanently

  • Infection

  • Short and long-term pain

It is also important to know that implant crowns remain in place because of mechanical retention the dentist creates, not adhesion.

You need to make sure that you talk to your cosmetic dentist about the fit and the tightness regarding your implant crowns, this will help you gain more knowledge. If your implant crown does fall off, your cosmetic dentist is truly the only person who can fix the problem with pure succession.
